Fenerbahce defender Martin Skrtel has been closely linked with a move to Rangers.
The Scottish Sun reported that Rangers have ‘almost agreed’ a £2.7 million deal for Sktel.
The 33-year-old’s agent Karol Csonto has opened up about the future of his client.
The agent spoke to Slovakian television station Pravda, revealing that while Skrtel would be keen on working with his former Liverpool teammate Steven Gerrard, he does not see how Rangers would be able to afford him.
Karol Csontó is quoted as saying: “Rangers is interested, I personally talked to Steven Gerrard about this possibility. In each transfer, however, it is first and foremost whether the player is leaving, and then financial matters are dealt with. This is not the case here. Martin has sincerely said that it would be his honour to play under Gerard’s leadership for some three years. At the moment, however, complex financial matters are far too far apart to find a compromise.
“The only option for Martin to leave is for a market like China or the US MLS. If it’s interesting for him. If not, he will stay in Fenerbahce.”
Skrtel made 320 appearances for Liverpool over a period of eight years, scoring 18 times and providing six assists in the process.
The experienced defender went onto join Fenerbahce back in 2016 and has another 12 months remaining on his contract.
The Slovakia international makes close to £4m per-season at the Yellow Canaries.
Rangers do however, still have hope as Fenerbahce will elect a new president on 3 June.
Should Ali Koc win against the incumbent Aziz Yildirim it could mark a shift in transfer policy.
