Arsenal star Mesut Özil has described the meaning behind his infamous slogan and hashtag #YaGunnersYa.

Özil often says the phrase after winning a trophy or one of his many Instagram and Twitter uploads.

The phrase has caught on and has become popular among the Arsenal faithful.

The World Cup winner also underlined that he is actually rather fond of English culture in particular the humour.

Özil told the official Arsenal website: “I really like the English culture, and the sense of humour. For example after we won the FA Cup final in 2014, I shouted “ja Gunners ja” into the camera and it’s almost become a cult here. The fans have supported me so well and that’s why I do it. When I post on Instagram, I always use the hashtag #YaGunnersYa. I like that humour and find it nice.”

Özil repeated his popular phrase after winning the FA Cup trophy for the second consecutive season.

The 26-year-old has won two FA Cup titles and the Community Shield since joining the Gunners on a record £42.5 million move from Real Madrid in 2013.

Özil provided his first assist of the season in the 2-1 win over Crystal Palace last week – the Gunners first win of the season.

The Arsenal playmaker is also expected to the start against Liverpool on Monday 24 August at the Emirates.
