Emre Can – Steven Gerrard is the 'greatest captain Liverpool have ever had'

Gerrard will make his final appearance at Anfield when Liverpool take on Crystal Palace today.

Emre Can may be the man to replace Steven Gerrard in midfield for Liverpool next season according to the Daily Mail, but here is what the 21-year-old has had to say about playing alongside Gerrard.

“He is the greatest captain Liverpool have ever had and I feel comfortable on the pitch because I always know Gerrard is behind me,” Can was quoted as saying by the Express.

“If I make a mistake, he is helping me out. He is like a big brother looking out for you if something goes wrong.”

Can went onto say that a conversation with Gerrard inspired him to score his first goal for Liverpool against Chelsea.

“Before the Chelsea game he said that in one of these big games it’s your time to shine. And then I scored against them. That was the unique piece of advice he gave me.”

The Germany U21 international has also stated that it would be like a dream to achieve what Gerrard has in the game.

“He has been playing for Liverpool since his childhood and already is a living legend.”

Can is expected to make his 39th appearance for the Red’s tonight alongside Skrtel, Lovren and Johnson in defence.
