Jurgen Klopp has confirmed Lazar Markovic will be given the chance to secure a place in Liverpool’s squad next season.
The Serbia international is currently at Anfield nursing an injury but is set to return to Fenerbahce shortly.
Markovic joined Liverpool for £20 million from Benfica in the summer of 2014 but endured a disappointing campaign and was sent on loan to Fenerbahce.
“We had a little talk about things. I said at the start of pre-season you will be very welcome and then it’s up to you,” Klopp was quoted as saying by the Mirror.
“That is how it is in football. It’s a long pre-season and if he wants to come back to Liverpool in July he’s welcome.
“We are short on wingers. Everybody who is involved in pre-season can have a part to play next season. We need a big squad because of the European Championships.
“Pre-season is a long time to show what you have and then after this we’ll make decisions.”
The 21-year-old has established himself as a first-team regular at Fenerbahce and the Istanbul giants are reported to be keen on keeping Markovic on a permanent deal or another one-year loan.
Markovic has missed the last few weeks with injury but is expected to return to the side next week after making a recovery.
Fenerbahce are currently first in the Turkish Super League, in the Turkish Cup semi-final and will take on Braga in the Europa League Last 16.
