Liverpool news: Germany international blames mentality on disappointing results

Liverpool star midfielder Emre Can has discussed his side’s troubles against the Premier Leagues lesser clubs.

The Reds have been in impressive form against the Premier League big boys but haven’t struggled against sides in the lower half of the table.

Their run was summed up last week when they comfortably defeated rivals Everton 3-1, only to drop points against Bournemouth at home days later.

Liverpool’s form against the leagues smaller sides has cost them a title challenge and has left them with work to do in the quest of a top-four finish.

Can stated that their mentality when facing smaller sides may be the reason behind the poor results.

“That’s a good question, I don’t think anyone knows [why Liverpool haven’t performed as well against lower league opposition],” Emre Can told SkySports.

“You have to go into every game with the same mentality and maybe we didn’t do that, I don’t know.

“Maybe we didn’t do those two or three extra steps and that’s why we didn’t win those games but like games against Bournemouth.

We could’ve won that game, it was in our hands and then we conceded a goal when we could have cleared the ball three or four times before.”

Can played the full 90 minutes during Liverpool’s 2-1 victory over Stoke City on Saturday.

Liverpool are currently in third place with 62 points after 32 games. The Reds take on West Brom in their next league fixture.
