The former Germany international Lothar Matthaus has stated that Borussia Dortmund should offer Ilkay Gündoğan a four year contract extension.
Matthaus went onto say that Gündoğan can get back to his best if he remains at the Bundesliga side.

“The club given him [Gündoğan] time to recover from a long term injury and he should repay their loyalty and sign a contract extension until 2019,” Matthaus told Sport Bild (via sportal).
“Gündogan has a great opportunity to develop into a world class midfielder at Dortmund.”
Gündoğan was closely linked with Barcelona and Bayern Munich but both clubs are reported to have cooled interest in the Germany international.
Manchester United are currently the bookmakers favourite for Gündoğan if he does decide to leave the German giants.
The Germany international is set to extend his contract with Dortmund following discussions with their newly appointed manager Thomas Tuchel.
Gündoğan rejected previous contract extension talks are reportedly turned down a deal worth €6 million per-season.
The Germany international wrapped up the season with five assists and three goals in 33 appearances in all competitions.
