The former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has stated that comparison’s being made between Mesut Ozil and Denis Bergkamp must wait until the end of the season.
“As it stands, though, it is nonsense to use statistics to try to compare Ozil and Bergkamp,” Carragher told the Mail.
“The reason is this: Bergkamp is immortalised in bronze outside the Emirates Stadium because, aside from all the medals he won, he helped bring fantasy football to north London. His style had substance.
“If Ozil continues to sparkle when it matters in the next 19 fixtures and inspires Wenger’s squad to their first Premier League title since 2004, it would make him a legend in the eyes of Arsenal fans. Until then the Bergkamp comparisons must wait.”
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger recently compared Ozil to Bergkamp during a post-match press conference.
“Yes, he reminds me of Bergkamp. Bergkamp was more of a goalscorer than him and Ozil is more about assists, but now Ozil is becoming more of a goalscorer, so they are really comparable,” Wenger was quoted as saying by SkySports.
Ozil has provided 16 assists in 17 Premier League games which is more than any other player in England and the top five leagues in Europe including France, Italy, Spain and Germany.
Arsenal moved two points clear of Leicester City at the top of the table following their 1-0 win over Newcastle United last weekend.
The Gunners take on Sunderland in the FA Cup next weekend and travel to Anfield to face Liverpool in their next league games.
