Mesut Ozil reveals why he snubbed Man United
Germany international star playmaker Mesut Ozil has revealed why he snubbed Man United and Arsenal.
The 28-year-old made the move from Werder Bremen to Real Madrid back in 2010. However, Ozil did have other offers on the table.
Ozil has revealed that both Arsenal and Manchester United tabled offeres for him. The Germany international opted to join Real Madrid as he felt they were the ‘bigger‘ side.
“At the time there were five potential clubs in the mix,” Ozil wrote in his new book Gunning for Greatness.
“Arsenal had shown their interest, as had Manchester United, Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Real Madrid.
“My agent, Reza, met Bayern Munich. The bosses told him what their plans were for me, how they wanted to use me.
“He had the same conversations with the other clubs.
“Viewed from a global perspective, the two Spanish clubs were bigger, brighter, bette.
“So for me these were the only two possibilities.”
Jose Mourinho was manager of Real Madrid when Ozil joined. The 28-year-old playmaker went onto join Arsenal while Mourinho now manages Manchester United.
Ozil heaped praise on the Portuguese tactician in his newly released autobiography named, Gunning for Greatness.
The 28-year-old’s Arsenal future has been cast in doubt after failing to put pen-to-paper on a new contract with Arsenal. Ozil’s current deal with the Gunners expires in 14 months.
Arsenal take on their north London rivals Tottenham in the Premier League on Sunday.
