Revealed: Euro giants like Liverpool overtaken by Besiktas in UEFA club rankings

Besiktas made history last week becoming the first Turkish side to book a place in the Champions League group stage as leaders after defeating Red Bull Leipzig.

The reigning Super Lig champions actually made history on Match Day 5 after guaranteeing top spot in Group G.

The Black Eagles beat Leipzig in Germany by a 2-1 scoreline on Match Day 6 despite fielding a heavily rotated side missing seven first team starters.

The Eagles finished the group with 14 points, with four wins – another record for a Super Lig outfit.

In fact Besiktas were one of only four sides to avoid defeat in the group stage along with Barcelona, Tottenham and Liverpool were the others.

The Eagles form was reflected in the latest UEFA club rankings.

UEFA had Besiktas ranked in the 30’s along with Liverpool at the start of the campaign before moving up into 28th spot on Match Day 6.

Besiktas have since moved up five spots from 28th to 23rd place overall ahead of the likes of European giants Liverpool who are 31st.

Roma, Villarreal and AS Monaco are all among the sides to have fallen behind Besiktas in the rankings.
