Hanover goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler was beaten from 28-yards from goal by the Leverkusen playmaker.
Calhanoglu’s strike was Bayer Leverkusen’s only goal who are hot on the heels of Bayern Munich with two victories in two games.
The Turkish international is regarded as being one of the best set-piece specialists around and has received rave reviews from Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola who said: “Çalhanoğlu is one of the best free-kick takers in the Bundesliga.”
Çalhanoğlu scored the highest number of free-kick goals – in the top five leagues in Europe – Premier League, Bundesliga, La Liga, Serie A, Ligue 1 – last season.
Sunderland were linked with Çalhanoğlu earlier this summer according to the Metro.
The 21-year-old joined Bayer on a €15 million transfer last season and has four-years left on his contract.
