Arsenal have lacked depth in midfield this season, something that manager Arsene Wenger recently acknowledged in an interview with the Guardian.

“If you look at the number of games some players played and the injuries we have with Wilshere, Ramsey and Arteta, we are a bit short at the moment in midfield,” Wenger said, when asked to name what position he would look to strengthen his squad in January.

The Gunners have switched between a 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3 formation this season but have just four senior central midfielders; Mikel Arteta, Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey and Mathieu Flamini. To make matters worse Wilshere, Ramsey and Arteta have spent long spells on the sidelines this season.

The addition of Gündoğan would add depth and quality to the Arsenal midfield. The German international has a passing accuracy of 84 percent this season and can be deployed in an attacking or defensive role.

The 24-year-old played a key role in Dortmund’s progression to the UEFA Champions League in the 2012-13 season and scored in the final against Bayern Munich.
