‘He played like a £70m midfielder’ – Carragher issues warning to Liverpool over midfield ace contract situation

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has heaped praise on Emre Can following his performance during the Reds win over Arsenal.

Jurgen Klopp’s side recorded a 4-0 victory over title rivals Arsenal on Sunday to move up into second place.

Can has been in impressive form for Liverpool this season, the 23-year-old netted a brace against Hoffenheim last week. Can also played a starring role against the Gunners yesterday.

Liverpool were 2-0 up going into the break following goals from Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.

Egypt international Mohamed Salah put Liverpool 3-0 up shortly after the break while Daniel Sturridge’s late header sealed three points.

Can didn’t score or provide an assist however, the Germany international helped Liverpool’s midfield assert their dominance over Arsenal.

“He was outstanding. They’ll be a lot of talk about the front three of Liverpool, and rightly so. But Liverpool were in the market for a midfield player this summer,” Carragher told Sky Sports.

“Can played like that player today – a £60m or £70m midfielder. He has a contract dispute at the moment. Hopefully that gets sorted out.”

Carragher also warned Liverpool about Can’s contract situation. The 23-year-old has under 12-months remaining on his deal with the Reds.

“There’s been talk of players coming in at Liverpool, but more importantly they need to keep players. Yes, Coutinho, but he [Can] is another one.”

Can has been called up to the Germany national team. Liverpool face another tough fixture against Manchester City when the Premier League returns on September 9.
