Besiktas deny reaching agreement with Chelsea midfielder

Beşiktaş have released a statement denying making an offer for Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel.

The Black Eagles underlined that they have not reached an agreement with Mikel over loaning the player in January.

The statement read: “Reports that we have been in talks over signing Mikel over the transfer window are false.”

The Fanatik newspaper claimed that Beşiktaş had entered talks with Chelsea over the transfer of Mikel.

The Istanbul giants were closely linked Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva until Brendan Rodgers decided to keep him at the club following injury to Jordan Henderson.

The Turkish Super League outfit are currently lacking depth in central midfield following injury to Tolgay Arslan and Veli Kavlak who are both out injured until the turn of the year.

The Black Eagles have established close ties with Chelsea over the past few seasons and approached the Blues for consultation on restructuring the academy and scouting system last season.

Beşiktaş are currently third in the Super League with six points after three games and have scored the highest number of goals in the league – 10.
