Liverpool midfielder-come-defender is set to make his first appearance under the stewardship of Jurgen Klopp against Tottenham in the Premier League tomorrow.
Brendan Rodgers was sacked following the 1-1 draw against rivals Everton in the Merseyside derby before the international break.
Klopp was appointed as his replacement during the two-week interval and will take charge of his first league game against Spurs.
Emre Can was a regular first-choice starter for Rodgers and is expected to keep his place in the team under the command of Klopp.
Can was used primarily as a defender last season despite being a central midfielder and it remains to be seen how Klopp will decide to use the Germany international.
