Bursaspor fans thought they would be a bit cheeky before the clash against Beşiktaş in the Turkish Super League yesterday by reminding their rivals of the time they lost 8-0 against Liverpool in the Champions League.
The fans in question brought Liverpool shirts with Gerrard and the number 8 on the back to rub salt into raw wounds but inadvertently ended up mocking their own manager Ertuğrul Sağlam who was head of Beşiktaş at the time.
The joke backfired and took social media by storm as the fans were mocked for their gaff.
Sağlam played for Beşiktaş as a player and famously guided the Istanbul giants to a record defeat in the Champions League against the Reds.
Beşiktaş ended up beating Bursaspor 1-0 thanks to a last minute goal from Oğuzhan Özyakup to move into first place in the league standings two points ahead of second placed Fenerbahçe.
The Black Eagles manager Şenol Güneş coincidently has also managed Bursaspor and guided the Green Crocodiles to the Turkish Cup final last season.
