Emre Can is not a ‘great full-back’ says Chelsea legend

Emre Can Germany v England Liverpool team news

Liverpool star Emre Can is not a great full-back according to Chelsea legend and football pundit Pat Nevin.

Can was played as a full-back and as a central defender under the stewardship of Brendan Rodgers last season but was moved into his preferred midfield role in Jurgen Klopp’s first game in charge of the Reds.

Klopp replaced Rodgers as Liverpool manager over the international break and took charge of his first game which ended in a goalless draw against Tottenham.

“I don’t see him as a great full-back. He has no great pace. I don’t see him as a centre-half because he hasn’t got pace,” Nevin told Newstalk’s Off The Ball.

Can sees himself as a central midfielder but has played predominately defensive roles over the past season for club and country.

The 21-year-old is expected to feature for Liverpool against Rubin Kazan at Anfield in the Europa League on Thursday. The game will be Klopp’s first European competition game in charge of his new side.

Liverpool are currently second in Group B on two points after successive draws in their opening two games.
