Mesut Özil presented with Silver Laurel Leaf Award [divider]
Arsenal star Mesut Özil has been presented with the Silver Laurel Leaf Award by German President Joachim Gauck and Chancellor Angela Merkel at the head of state’s Bellevue Palace.
The Silver Laurel Leaf is Germany’s highest sporting accolade.
The award recognised the achievements of the German national team winning the 2014 World Cup.
Gauck said, “the award is for the convincing performance that is recognized ungrudgingly by all its opponents.”
Özil took to his Twitter account to share a picture from the ceremony.
The 26-year-old also shared the following post on his Facebook account, “What an honour: the silver laurel leaf for our World Cup victory given to us by our president Joachim Gauck. DFB-Team #Bellevue.”
Özil became the first player of Turkish origin to win the World Cup this summer.
The Arsenal playmaker will miss the international break with injury, Özil is expected to recover towards the end of the year.
