Stats show Arsenal star Mesut Ozil on par with Alexis Sanchez against Olympiakos

Arsenal suffered a shock home defeat in their second Champions League group stage game against Olympiakos midweek.

Opta stats show that Arsenal star Mesut Özil was actually on par with Alexis Sanchez during the Gunners surprise defeat at the hands of Olympiakos.

Özil was unable to provide an assist or goal. The World Cup winner has yet to setup up a goal or get on the scoresheet in the Champions League this season.

However, the stats will leave Arsenal fans confused especially following the criticism the Germany international received after the game.

According to Opta Özil had 117 touches on the ball, created two chances, made 81 accurate passes, 35 passes in the final third and one successful dribble.

In contrast Alexis Sanchez had 95 touches, created four chances, made just 38 accurate passes and 12 dribbles. The Chilean international also scored Arsenal’s second goal.

Olympiakos strategic advisor and BT Sport pundit Christian Karembeu criticised Özil’s performance in the loss against the Greek giants.

“I am so sorry for Özil he was missing, he did not do anything,” Karembeu said on BT Sport after the Arsenal v Olmypiakos game.

“I know him from Real Madrid he was a key player there but he could not help the team today or deliver some key passes,” he added.

Özil has two goals and three assists in all competitions for the Gunners this season.

Arsenal dropped into last place in Group F following the loss and will take on Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich home and away in their next two games.
