Hakan Çalhanoğlu stole the limelight as far as Turks plying their trade outside Turkey were concerned.

The Turkish international scored another spectacular free-kick to give Bayer a 1-0 victory over rivals Schalke.

Schalke’s Turkish representative Kaan Ayhan could do little to prevent his Turkish national teammate curling the ball around the wall.

Çalhanoğlu has now scored 14 free kick goals in his last two seasons.

The 20-year-old also impressed mid-week in the Champions League. Çalhanoğlu provided two assists against Zenit in Bayer’s 2-0 win over the Russian giants.

Ömer Toprak put on a solid display for Bayer, helping the home side keep a clean sheet.

Elsewhere in the Bundesliga, Hannover boss Tayfun Korkut guided his side to a surprise 1-0 win over Borussia Dortmund. Ceyhun Gülselam put in a fine defensive display in midfield, completing the highest number of tackles (7) in the game. The Turkish internationals combative midfield display did however, end up resulting in a red card on 89 minutes.

Halil Altıntop scored for Augsburg in their 2-0 win over Freiburg while HSV midfielder Tolgay Arslan was on the wrong end of a 3-0 loss against Hertha Berlin.

In England, Emre Can made his second Premier League start for Liverpool in the Reds goalless draw against Hull.

Can had an 82.5 per cent against Hull and got himself involved in the game with 52 touches of the ball. The 20-year-old also worked hard defensively, making important interceptions and two effective clearances.

The draw saw Liverpool drop into seventh place.

Over in Spain, Arda Turan got his second assist in as many games, setting up Mario Mandzukic in Atletico Madrid’s 1-0 win against Getafe.

The Turkish international now has two goals and two assists for the Spanish champions this season.
