Emre Can should be dropped for Jordan Henderson says Liverpool legend

Liverpool legend John Aldridge has stated that Emre Can or Gini Wijnaldum should be dropped if Jordan Henderson is fit.

Reds captain Henderson has been sidelined for over a month due to a foot injury. However, the combative midfielder returned to first team training this week and is in contention for a place in this weekends squad.

Liverpool take on their biter rivals Everton in the Merseyside derby on Saturday.

Emre Can has been in impressive form for Liverpool in Henderson’s absence. The 23-year-old scored the winning goal against Burnley and put on a solid display against Man City.

The Germany international is however playing in Henderson’s place and is likely to be benched when the captain returns.

“If Jordan Henderson is fit, he starts on Saturday,” Aldridge told the Liverpool Echo.

“That might sound harsh to whoever has to miss out, be it Emre Can or Gini Wijnaldum, but the captain needs to be playing in a game like this.

“Hopefully he’ll get some good training in this week and be ready to go at the weekend.

“I think we’ve seen how important he is to the side, and I think his experience and leadership will be valuable for a game like this.

“He was brilliant at Goodison earlier in the season, keeping his cool and leading by example as we chased that win. I hope we see him on Saturday.”

Liverpool are currently in fourth place in the Premier League, four points ahead of fifth placed Manchester United.

Emre Can has three assists and four goals to his name after 31 appearances for Liverpool this season.
