Germany boss pleased with Liverpool’s Emre Can at right-back

Germany national team manager Joachim Low revealed that he was pleased with Emre Can’s performance on his debut against Poland in the Euro 2016 Group D clash.

“I was pleased with Emre’s first game [for Germany],” Low was quoted as saying by the Liverpool Echo.

“It was not easy for him to withstand the pressure of playing the group leaders Poland, in his first game; he has done well.”

Can had the option to represent both Germany and Turkey at international level but opted for his country of birth over his parents homeland.

The German side won the game 3-1 to move into first-place and while Can did get to start he was deployed at right-back.

Can put on a what Low described as a ‘decent performance’ against Poland and the head coach stated that he coped well with playing in a position he was not familiar with.

“He is not a player who is used to playing in the right side of a back four. It was good to see him do well. He tackled well, showed strength and has a good passing game,” he added.

“It was a decent debut performance.”

Can is no stranger to playing in defence having been used predominantly as a centre-back in Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers back-three last season.

However, Rodgers did also use Can as a full-back in a back four but the less said about that the better – especially his performance in the 6-1 defeat against Stoke City towards the end of last season.

Can is expected to start against against Scotland in the next Euro 2016 Group D game on Monday 7 September before returning to England for the Reds clash against Premier League giants Manchester United.
