Manchester City have completed the sensational re-signing of former captain Ilkay Gündoğan on a one-year deal with an option for an additional year.

The German midfielder, who joined Barcelona on a free transfer last summer after seven successful seasons at City, returns to the Etihad Stadium. Gündoğan played a crucial role in City’s historic Treble last season and was highly regarded by manager Pep Guardiola.

“I’m incredibly happy,” he was quoted as saying on the official Manchester City website. “Happy to see the team-mates, the staff, people that over seven years I had an amazing time with, a very successful time with. Many ups, a few downs, but in general, an incredible experience.

“When you leave this place like I did last year, you spend a year away, you then start to appreciate the place even more. You realise what you had. You realise how amazing that time was.

“You realise how big the club is – the best club in the world.

“In terms of football, getting back onto that level and coming back now a year later is an incredible feeling, and I am very pleased. I’m very happy. I feel privileged to share the dressing room again with these amazing players.”

Gündoğan’s return to City comes amid financial challenges at Barcelona, which prevented them from registering new signing Dani Olmo. By letting Gündoğan go, Barcelona were able to comply with La Liga’s spending restrictions.

While Gündoğan expressed his sadness at leaving Barcelona, he also acknowledged the financial necessity of his departure. He thanked the club and its fans for their support during his time in Spain.
