Arsenal legend Robert Pires stated that former Liverpool winger Steve Mcmanaman was wrong to put down Mesut Özil’s free-kick goal against the Reds down to a goalkeeping error.
“Again, I am not sure Mignolet can do much better because the strike is so clinical and goes out before coming back in,” Pires told the official Arsenal website.
The Gunners beat Liverpool by a 4-1 scoreline in the Premier league last weekend.
McManaman did not praise Özil for scoring, instead Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet was blamed for conceding the free-kick.
“It was not a sublime free-kick it was a goalkeeping error,” Mcmanam said speaking on BT Sport.
Arsenal moved into second place following the win over the Reds and face a tricky away trip next against Burnley.
The Gunners are seven points behind league leaders Chelsea but have played an extra game than the Blues.
Pires also stated that Özil has been working hard for Arsenal despite having a reputation as being lazy.
“But Mesut also worked hard for the team, he defended, he was precious on the ball and he was simply instrumental,” he added.
Özil was recently found to have actually been the hardest working player in the Arsenal team in terms of distance covered since returning from injury according to the Telegraph.
